HostPapa is one of the few independent hosting companies that provides web hosting to individuals and small businesses. The company started in 2006 and has grown significantly in the last 14 years. With an estimated 500,000 sites under its wing, it’s considered among the best web hosting Australia, best web hosting Canada, best web hosting Malaysia, best web hosting Singapore, and best web hosting UK.
The company itself operates out of Canada and has data centers in the US and Canada. It’s also one of the few hosting companies that offer phone support in multiple languages, including French, Spanish, German, and English.
In this HostPapa review, we take a deep looking into HostPapa’s service, pricing, and performance to help you decide whether this is the right web hosting service for you.
Like most hosting providers, HostPapa offers affordable shared hosting, more pricey VPS, and dedicated hosting. For this review, we’ll focus mainly on the company’s shared hosting options.
HostPapa has two shared hosting options: Starter and Business. The Starter plan is the lower-tier plan and costs $3.95 per month if you sign a three-year contract. If you choose a shorter term, you’ll pay a higher monthly price. Once the three-year term is up, you can expect to pay $7.99 per month.
The Business Plan also starts at $3.95 per month for three years but goes up to $12.99 per month after renewal.
Both plans offer pretty standard features, including SSL certification, access to a web builder, unmetered bandwidth, and two free domains (for the first year). There are two significant differences between the plans:
- Starter gives you 100 GB SSD storage space, while Business ups this to unlimited space
- Starter gives you two domains and 25 sub-domains, while Business gives you unlimited domains and sub-domains
HostPapa provides an array of support options to address your concerns. It has a very thorough Knowledge page that covers most of the basic concerns users have, along with a FAQ to address any questions you may raise. It also offers a one-to-one service to help you set up your website.
If you’re still struggling, you can get in touch with HostPapa through most channels, including phone support, live chat, and email tickets. It’s the only web host we know of that has phone support in over 18 countries and four languages.
Unfortunately, despite all of these measures, HostPapa’s customer support is rather poor. Many users have reported struggling to get on the line with an agent, while others have found that agents cannot resolve their issues.
Above Average Performance
The main requirement of a web host is to provide reliable and fast service. HostPapa performs above average, both in terms of uptime and speed. The provider has an estimated uptime of around 99.97%, which translates to less than three hours down during an entire year.
It also offers relatively good speeds at around 700 ms, though these speeds will vary depending on your location. 700 ms is well above industry standards and when combined with Cloudflare CDN ensures you don’t lose customers due to excessive load times.
Good Value for Money
HostPapa offers very good value for money if you’re willing to put up a three-year contract term. The plan has the features that a small business or independent website owner needs to run their site effectively. The fact that you also get two domains with the Starter plan is the icing on the cake.
Long Contract Terms
If you want to get the best price for a HostPapa plan, you need to commit to a three-year contract. Considering how fast the digital world moves, doing so can seriously affect your scalability and flexibility as your business grows.
HostPapa offers low prices and above-average performance, which makes it an appealing option for small business owners. However, its plans lack higher-end features, and HostPapa’s competitors have similarly priced-packages that may offer better value for money.
